After fans watched their breakup on Monday's episode of Bachelor in ParadiseTia Booth and Colton Underwood took to social media to reflect on their split.
"Never ever regret following your heart," the physical therapist from Weiner, Ark. wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the smiling duo. "Things may not always work out as you planned, but they always work out as they should. Thankful that this chapter of our lives has ended so new chapters can begin. I truly wish you the best, C. #peaceoutparadise#hotdogsforever #thankseleven."
The former pro football player from Denver, Colo. also thanked Booth for their time together.
"Thank you for teaching me even more about myself, and most importantly, for your friendship that I know will continue far beyond Paradise," he wrote alongside a photo from their hot dog date. "Don't settle for anything less than the world, because that's what you deserve. Can't wait to see what the future has in store for you and catch up on life some day, preferably over a hot dog dinner."

Despite these well wishes, it didn't make watching the breakup on national television any easier.
"Y'all ever had a bad breakup with someone you wanted so bad? Ever had to watch it back on national television? #woof" Booth tweeted on Monday.

Booth also joked about a reconciliation after Bachelor in Paradise's famous on-again, off-again couple Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon got engaged during Monday night's episode.
"So you're telling me there's a chance?! @ashleyiaco #jk congrats to you two!!" Booth wrote.

Bachelor Nation met Booth on Arie Luyendyk Jr. s season of The Bachelor. But before the season aired, Booth connected with Underwood. Underwood had already applied to be a contestant on Becca Kufrin's season of The Bachelorette; however, he wasn't sure if he'd be cast as one of her suitors. So, he and Booth went on a date. But after finding out he'd been cast on season 14 of The Bachelorette, Underwood decided to pursue Kufrin's heart.
During his time on The Bachelorette, Underwood admitted to Kufrin he had gone on a date with Booth, who was one of her friends. While this initially put a strain on the relationship, the two were able to move forward. However, Booth later made an appearance on the show and told Kufrin she still had feelings for Underwood. The athlete went home the following episode. Although, Kufrin has defended Booth and insisted it wasn't because of her confession.
Both Booth and Underwood went on to appear on the most recent season of Bachelor in Paradise. After a bit of a rocky start and warning from former contestant Raven Gates, the two decided to give the relationship another chance. Underwood even asked Booth to be his girlfriend. But on Monday's episode, Underwood admitted he couldn't see a future with Booth and they broke up. Both stars left the show after the split.

Underwood's former relationship with Booth wasn't his first romance to make headlines. He also previously dated Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman.
Now, Underwood is the one handing out the roses. ABC announced he will be the next Bacheloron Tuesday.

Bachelor in Paradise Recap: Trapped in Paradise

There was a voice floating from across the plains. A plaintive wail drifted from across the lands. A cry in the night. A whimper in the distance. It was the voice of a charming and witty freelance writer. It was just two words …

….. freeeeee meeeeee ……

FREE ME FROM THIS HELL. OH GOD. I looked down in the sand and there was just one set of roller bag tracks. WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? What have I done to deserve this punishment? To sit through three hours of Bachelor in Paradise. I wish this world was better. There are so many things that we need to fix about this world, about ourselves. So many things that I need to fix about myself. I seriously feel like the easiest one to fix is make Bachelor in Paradise half as long. We can’t solve global warming or government corruption in a day but we can do this.

I mean … WOW. Where even to begin? It’s all bad. Wait, I take that back. There is literally one shining moment.

Jenna is freaking out because Eric and Angela’s relationship is crumbling (we’ll get to that) and she’s hiding underneath a pillow weeping. Jordan comes up to her and asks her what’s wrong, listens to her concerns, literally tells her “There’s a lot going on. I’m not minimizing your feelings. It’s okay to be emotional. I’m sticking by my hot baby (ew).” Jordan demonstrated a mature and respectful way to handle your partner’s emotions. These desperate times make for strange bedfellows.

There’s a whole bunch of weirdness in this episode so I hope you’re ready. Let’s get to it.

The first bomb to go off in Paradise is Eric going on a date with Cassandra. Everyone is sitting around trying to console Angela while she just stands around in the middle of different rooms weeping. Eric and Angela’s romantic date starts with Popsicles and Eric making a completely uncalled-for toast. They’re not in glasses. There’s nothing to toast. Eric tells Cassandra that he wants a woman who can give him consistency, honesty, and reciprocate everything he’s giving. I think we have to invent a new type of irony for Bachelor in Paradise. Angela? Still full-on weeping.

The show cuts between Angela’s incredibly tragic monologue while we see Eric and Cassandra riding in a cowboy parade, getting crowned king and queen of the cowboy parade, making out in the middle of the rodeo. Angela has never felt more like a fool and she thought that Eric was the last person to do that to her. Y’KNOW WHAT? SO DID I! The fact that Paradise has debased someone like Eric means that we have truly reached the rockiest of bottoms. Eric’s reasoning for why he had a sudden change of heart is that Angela is moving the relationship too slowly and he doesn’t feel that spark. This feels like we got two people with two completely different Love Languages here.

Eric and Angela are still enjoying their sensual cowboy parade when Colton gets the call it’s time for him to be the next Bachelor.

I mean … he realized that he just can’t fake his relationship with Tia anymore.

Oh wow, however you say it, it sounds very bad.

Colton. Colton. Colton. Just when I thought we were done with these two sentient buttermilk biscuits. Colton sits down with Kevin to tell him that his heart just isn’t in the relationship with Tia anymore. He wants to be the one who makes her happy but he’s putting pressure on himself to keep up the relationship. All he wants to do is please others and it comes at the detriment of his own satisfaction.

Yo. I’m sorry. This is all awfully mature for a 26-year-old who spent the first half of the season saying he just needed to be confused for a while. Most importantly, this is just not a reason a guy breaks up with you. Guys break up with you because you they’re getting back together with their ex-girlfriend whose dad has a boat. Guys break up with you because they’re weirded out by your need for “commitment” and “intimacy.” Guys break up with you because this is the year the Hawkeyes are going to the Rose Bowl and they just can’t be tied down right now. Basically, ultimately selfish reasons. A 26-year-old breaking up with his girlfriend while at a Mexican resort because she deserves someone who can give her a happy life is OUTRAGEOUS.

Tia, of course, breaks down and her only reaction is to leave right then and there. She says that Colton needs to take time to work on himself. Tia, that is not going to happen. He’s going to take time to force 30 women to deal with all his neuroses Monday nights on ABC.

Everyone cannot comprehend that such a strong couple is out of the game. YOU ALL THOUGHT TIA AND COLTON HAD A STRONG RELATIONSHIP? You sweet little dummies. After comforting Jenna, Jordan is doing an interview on the beach and John wakes up and wants to know where Tia and Colton are. He napped through the whole thing. John must be way more charming in person.

Everyone is crying and shaken except for Angela and Eric who come back from their date. The concept of time and space on this show is upside down. Eric takes Angela aside and he asks how she’s doing. NOT GREAT, ERIC. She can’t comprehend how he completely changed his mind in eight hours. Angela says she was all in. Eric says “What does ‘in’ really mean?” Angela just says “Okay.” Uh-oh. She’s walking away from this conversation a little too calmly. She takes Cassandra aside and breaks down her conversation with Eric. She says that she doesn’t want to change how Cassandra feels but just to let her know. Girl. If you’re gonna be about it, be about it. You knew exactly what you were doing and it wasn’t “just wanting Cassandra to have all the information.” Eric sits down with Cassandra and she’s not feeling him anymore. Well, at least until the rose ceremony.

The next morning, Kevin and Astrid are lounging around. They are reassuring each other that even though Colton and Tia and Eric and Angela have imploded, they’re still all in in the traditional definition of the term. Kevin tells her that even though the walls are crumbling around them, they still get to watch amazing sunsets and he’s falling in love with her. She’s falling in love with him. At least there’s one pure relationship on this show.

In the morning, Jordan shaves Chris’s baby hairs off. Chris, I tried to do this once when I was about 8 years old. They grew back straight up and took years to grow in right. Have fun with that.

There’s two new arrivals in the morning: Shushanna and Christen. They have a double-date card. Wells decides to tell Yuki about the whole “scallop fingers” thing. Without everyone “laughing” about the nickname, it’s really … mean? It’s somehow meaner than before. Just one man reminding everyone about a mean nickname like it’s a irrefutable fact. No, thanks. Just because she has a mean nickname also doesn’t change the fact that she’s a thirsty bitch. Shushanna and Christen choose Kamil and John for their dates. Kamil tells Shu that he’s in sort of a friend situation with Anneliese and they both have agreed to explore other relationships. Anneliese pretends to be okay with Kamil going on the date until he’s out of earshot and proceeds to weep ALL DAY.

After the foursome head out for their double date, Chris Harrison shows up. He says that he’s bringing in special guests to decide who is going on the next date card. It’s Ashley I and Jared. Oh Christ. Here we go. Chris says that he considers Ashley and Jared a Paradise success story even though no part of their relationship flourished on any iteration of Paradise. Jared says that they were both “dating someone else.” Yeah, he’s standing in the back, dog. He also says that “timing is everything.” Fuck you, dude. You don’t get to say that when we all know the timeline between you “coming to your senses” and Kevin and Ashley’s relationship is very squishy.

Chris sends Ashley and Jared down to the beach and tells everyone to hang back because there’s no date card. THERE IS A NEIL LANE ENGAGEMENT RING.

My absolute favorite part of their engagement is Ashley didn’t take off her stilettos before she walked onto the beach so the heels of her shoes sink into the sand and she’s walking like her feet are on backwards.

Kevin is forced to watch his ex-girlfriend get engaged to the man she maybe cheated on him with. Here’s to love! Do we have confirmation that Kevin and Ashley had sex during their relationship so let’s add that weird fucking medieval layer to what’s happening. Kevin has a bit of a meltdown and Astrid sits with him. There’s a real date card and it’s for Kevin. IT BETTER BE.

He goes to dinner with Astrid and they tell each other they love each other.

Are we done yet? Set me free.

After the double date, Kamil tells Anneliese that he’s only interested in her and John manages to kiss Olivia and Christen. Seriously? Is this dude making up for when he was not John-of-Venmo-fame?

All right: it’s time for the rose ceremony. Four girls are going home and the only people with roses even remotely up for grabs are John, Eric, and maybe Kamil. Shushanna is not giving up on Kamil and Cassandra decides that yeah, maybe Eric is still kinda cute. But before Chris Harrison can start the cocktail party, he’s got one new guy to jump in — Jordan from New Zealand! He’s just … here, I guess?

Shushanna is so nervous to go talk to Kamil. She doesn’t understand why Kamil isn’t fawning over her. She felt that connection. She works up the courage to go talk to him. Can someone tell me what the big deal with this guy is? I’ve never seen anyone with less charisma in my entire life. He says he tried to open up to her on their date. Bitch, where? It doesn’t matter because he didn’t feel that spark so she’s looking elsewhere. The other woman who has decided to set her sights on Kamil is Chelsea. She takes him aside and encourages him to explore his feelings. They hold hands and Anneliese stares them down. Anneliese is the type of girl who would read your text messages. Did Chelsea think she was getting away with this?

Anneliese tells Chelsea not to poke the bear and stand down. Chelsea feigns ignorance and says that maybe Anneliese is hearing what she wants to hear. I mean … true.

It’s time for the rose ceremony. All the standard relationships get roses. Jordan and Jenna, Kevin and Astrid, Kendall and Joe, Chris and Krystal. Eric gives rose to Cassandra. Jordan 2 gives his rose to Shushanna ensuring one more week of drama with Kamil. John gives his to Olivia and Kamil gives his rose to Anneliese.

Before the rose ceremony is over, Christen has a fainting spell that requires paramedics and Chelsea hyperventilates in her final interview. If they can’t find love, they’ll perish here, much like my own spirit. Paradise claims more souls tonight.

Does antimatter fall up or down? New device may tell

The mystery of whether antimatter falls up or down could be solved with a new experiment to weigh matter's odd cousin, researchers say.

Antimatter is identical to normal matter in some respects but the exact opposite in others. For instance, although the antiproton has the same mass as its counterpart the proton, it is negatively charged instead of positively charged.

When a particle meets its antiparticle, they annihilate each other, giving off a burst of energy a proof of Einstein's famous equation, E=mc2, which revealed mass can be converted to energy and vice versa. A gram of antimatter annihilating a gram of matter would release about twice the energy as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. (Have no fear of antimatter bombs popping up anytime soon researchers are very far from creating anywhere near a gram of antimatter.)

Scientists have long wondered if antimatter falls down, responding the same way to gravity as ordinary matter. Physicists have generally assumed it does, but many have kept an open mind regarding antimatter's behavior since much about it remains a mystery. [6 Weird Facts About Gravity]

"We don't really understand antimatter," study author Holger Mller, a physicist at the University of California at Berkeley, told Live Science. "For instance, the fundamental laws of physics suggest there should be equal amounts of matter and antimatter in the universe, but our observations tell us there is vastly more matter than antimatter in the universe, and there is no agreed-upon explanation for that."

In addition, there is much about gravity that remains uncertain. For instance, astronomers looking at how galaxies rotate discovered there is far more gravity holding them together than there should be, "which is usually ascribed to gravity from dark matter, but nobody knows what that is," Mller said.

Direct evidence of whether or not antimatter falls downward remains difficult to experimentally gather. Antimatter is rare, and annihilates when it comes into contact with regular matter.

"The combination of antimatter and gravity has never been directly experimentally tested before," Mller said. "There are indirect observations others have obtained, but the very simple experiment of letting a chunk of antimatter drop and seeing what happens has never been done."

Now researchers have proposed a device they suggest could help solve the mystery of whether antimatter falls up or down.

"We don't understand 100 percent about antimatter, and the same is true for how gravity works, so looking at them in combination seems a good spot to look for a new discovery in physics," Mller said.

The instrument, a light-pulse atom interferometer, could measure the behavior of any particle atoms, electrons and protons, as well as their antimatter counterparts. It works by studying cold particles ones cooled to a degree above the coldest possible temperature, absolute zero.

At such cold temperatures, scientists can see particles behaving much like waves, rippling up and down within a chamber. By analyzing how these "matter waves" interfere with each other, the researchers can distinguish the force of gravity each particle is experiencing.

Mller and his colleaguesare working to construct their device and integrate into the ALPHA experiment at the CERN physics lab in Geneva, Switzerland, which makes, captures and studies atoms of anti-hydrogen, the antimatter counterpart of the simplest atom, hydrogen.

"Currently the production rate of anti-hydrogen at CERN is four atoms per hour, or an atom every 15 minutes," Mller said. "This production rate currently cannot be sustained 24-7, so 300 anti-hydrogen atoms a month or so is all we can hope for right now."

Since the researchers have very few anti-hydrogen atoms for experiments, their system essentially "recycles" each atom. Magnetic fields trap the atoms so the device can potentially measure the way each atom behaves multiple times.

"We need to get a signal out of each and every single atom we can't afford to lose a single one," Mller said.

The scientists expect their system will reach an initial accuracy of better than 1 percent for measuring how anti-hydrogen falls, and they noted they could eventually improve this accuracy 10,000-fold.

The scientists detailed their findings online March 25 in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Josh Elliott praises NBC gig, denies he will replace Matt Lauer

Departing "Good Morning America" news anchor Josh Elliott says he has not personally had any discussions about working on NBC News’s "Today" show, that he hopes co-anchor Matt Lauer will still be at "Today" “when I step away from this gig 30 years down the road,” and that he loves ABC News chief Ben Sherwood deeply and passionately for making him news anchor at "GMA." Elliott was on the phone with reporters to discuss this weeks worst kept TV industry secret — Elliott has jumped ship, abandoning "GMA" to join NBC Sports Group.

NBC Sports chief Mark Lazarus said Elliott would perform “a mix” of reporting and anchoring, including a presence in the division’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby, NFL football , the Super Bowl and the Winter and Summer Olympics, to which NBC has broadcast rights through 2020.

“One of the beauties of this budding and new relationship,” Lazarus said, is that Elliott fits in well with the existing team, adding, “we’ve still got plenty of time to sort out” details of his role.

Elliott got asked loads of questions about his departure from GMA; he “denied categorically” press reports about the ensemble cast’s jealousy over Robin Roberts’ lucrative contract, insisting he loved them all and wished them the best. “I owe everything to the folks at Disney” he said. “They’re the ones who put me in the air nine years ago. I have nothing but gratitude for them” he said speaking “to my very deep and abiding important relationship I have with [ABC News chief] Ben Sherwood.”

ABC, he said, “also put a generous and wonderful offer on the table,” as his contract set to expire in a few weeks, Elliott said. But he went with the opportunity that was ” best for me at this moment in time.” He denied suggestions NBC came after him to break up the "Good Morning America" team which, during his tenure on that show overtook "Today" show in the ratings.

“This wasn’t one company doing something to another, wasn’t somebody looking to upset an apple cart…I was the subject of this sentence,” Elliott insisted. “I’m so happy to have made the choice I made — I cannot believe I would be part of an Olympics broadcast! I feel like the luckiest man in television today and that is all because of what was for me a wondrous decade at Disney, and a glorious three years at ABC news and 'GMA.'” His "GMA" replacement Amy Robach is “half pirate, half trucker” and “about as tough as they come,” and one of his favorite people, he said.

On the call, when he began to discuss opportunities down the road to become involved with "Today" show, once his non-compete expires in six months, saying, “The only discussions as related to news were ways to provide sports content for them across all of their shows” and adding, “I hope I have to chance to tell stories I get to tell to the most number of people and thankfully I’m at a place that has a lot of different ways to do that” Lazarus cut him off, jumping in to say, “Our mission is to get Josh integrated into NBC Sports,” and that ”we’ve got a great group of people here but with Josh we get better.”

ABC had pre-empted this morning’s NBC Sports announcement when Sherwood issued a memo to staffers over the weekend, announcing Amy Robach was replacing Elliott as news anchor on ABC’s morning infotainment program. So the first official word of Elliott’s new gig went like this:

At the same time, Josh Elliott let us know today that he is going to NBC Sports.

As many of you know, we have been negotiating with Josh these past several months. In good faith, we worked hard to close a significant gap between our generous offer and his expectations. In the end, Josh felt he deserved a different deal and so he chose a new path.

I want to thank Josh for his many contributions to "GMA" and ABC News. Later in the week, we will bid him farewell.

Asked about Sherwood’s memo, Elliott responded “we have to accept things we cannot change,” adding, “Ben knows how I feel about him and l like to think I know how Ben feels about me. We were partners in a crazy thing — Ben was crazy to give me a shot. He took a huge gamble, rolled too many dice. We could not have believed it would work out way it did, ” adding at one point, “I will forever love him deeply and passionately for it.”

If Sherwood wrote in his memo about his move to NBC Sports in “anything other than a laudatory tone… it probably derives from the intensely personal nature of it all” he said. Of Sherwood, he continued to say, “I will forever love him deeply and passionately for it.”

First official word out of NBC about Elliott’s hire came Monday morning in the form of a tweet from "Today" show weatherman Al Roker, congratulating him for his “conscious uncoupling” from "GMA"/ABC. And, NBCU’s The Weather Channel that morning featured a little bit by Sam Champion — himself previously poached from GMA by NBCU — in which he called Elliott’s hire “a great opportunity for Josh’s heart,” adding, “I know that fans of GMA are not loving it.”

Elliott left "GMA" after long, intense negotiations with ABC News in which he reportedly sought to increase his $1.2 million annual salary to something approaching $10 mil. NBC Sports is paying him about $4 mil a year, according to sources though it has been reported he took a “pay cut” to join NBC Sports — because ABC was willing to pony up $5 mil to keep him. Yes, that’s TV industry math.

Late last month, when "Good Morning America" signed Lara Spencer to a new contract, it left Elliott the lone holdout among "GMA" cast members whose contracts were coming up now, as the morning infotainment show got buffeted by competitor NBC. NBC wanted Elliott — who came to "GMA" from ABC parent Disney’s ESPN — to work both in news and sports, a sort of next-generation Bob Costas.

ABC News already made news that blunted somewhat Elliott’s big moment this morning, when word got out that Michael Strahan, one half of "Live! With Kelly & Michael," also soon would be seen regularly on "Good Morning America." Strahan will continue to co-host his daytime talker with Kelly Ripa. (Ripa also had been approached about joining 'GMA,' but she declined, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.) Talks with Strahan began about a month ago, which predates Elliott’s decision to depart "GMA," announced over the weekend, and Strahan initially will be seen on "GMA" a couple days a week. The addition of Strahan gives "GMA" an anchor with a sports background to take over that responsibility from Elliott — Strahan having spent 15 years playing for the New York Giants.

Microsoft unveils Windows 8.1 Update 1: Here are the new features

At Build 2014, Microsoft’s annual developer-focused conference, the company dished out some details about Windows 8.1 Update 1, the first significant Windows update since it became available back in October. Here’s a rundown of the changes that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will bring about once it’s released as a free update for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users on April 8, which happens to be Microsoft’s next regularly scheduled Patch Tuesday.

Boot straight to the Desktop:
As was previously rumored, Windows 8.1 Update 1 will allow users to boot and resume straight to the classic desktop UI, allowing them to bypass the tiled Modern UI altogether. This will likely be a welcome feature considering that the Modern portion of Windows 8 hasn’t been well received since it debuted back in late 2012.

Changes to the Taskbar
With Windows 8.1 Update 1, you can use both desktop programs and Windows Store apps from the classic desktop UI. Windows Store apps will also work on the desktop UI’s Taskbar as well, and a new button on the Taskbar will permit you to access the Windows Store without forcing you to dive into the Modern UI to do so. With Windows 8.1 Update 1, the Taskbar will be accessible while using Modern apps by moving your mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen.

Tweaks to the Modern UI Start screen:
The Modern UI Start screen will also receive some tweaks, including dedicated Power and Search buttons. The addition of a dedicated power button in the Start Screen will allow users to power their PCs off without having to open the Charms menu, shaving some seconds off the process of shutting down their systems. Newly installed Modern apps will be labeled “New,” and will pull up a drop-down menu when right-clicked, as opposed to the bar on the bottom of the screen.

Overall, Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a minor refresh as opposed to a dramatic makeover. Microsoft also reiterated that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will drop the minimum system requirements to 1GB of RAM and only require 16GB of storage, allowing the OS to run on lower-end PCs.

We look forward to spending time with Windows 8.1 Update 1 once its released next week, and we’ll follow up with our hands-on impressions as well.

NASA suspends ties with Russian gov't officials over ongoing crisis in Crimea

NASA has suspended contact with Russian government representatives, citing ongoing violations of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to an internal letter written by a top official on Wednesday.

The authenticity of the letter has been confirmed by Fox News.

“This suspension includes NASA travel to Russia and visits by Russian Government representatives to NASA facilities, bilateral meetings, email, and teleconferences or videoconferences,” states the letter, which was written by Michael F. O'Brien, NASA’s associate administrator for international and interagency relations.

However, ongoing activities at the International Space Station (ISS) have been exempted from the rules, as well as “multilateral meetings held outside of Russia that may include Russian participation.”

There are currently two Americans onboard the ISS.

NASA told Fox News that it will release a statement on the situation soon.

In early March, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden insisted that the U.S. and Russia’s space partnership was not being strained over tensions in Ukraine.

"Right now, everything is normal in our relationship with the Russians," Bolden said at the time. "I think people lose track of the fact that we have occupied the International Space Station now for 13 consecutive years uninterrupted, and that has been through multiple international crises."

The U.S. relies on the Russian Souyez rockets for all manned trips to and from space. NASA signed an agreement with Russia last April, governing six flights through 2017, at a cost of $70.7 million per seat.

Amid the crisis in Crimea, there is growing concern over the U.S.'s reliance on Russia for human transport to and from the International Space Station since retiring the American space shuttle program.

Willie Nelson's armadillo returned after theft

A stuffed armadillo that serves as an on-stage mascot for country music legend Willie Nelson has been returned after being kidnapped from a Las Vegas-area show.

Officials at the Westin Lake Las Vegas resort in Henderson say the critter, named Ol' Dillo, vanished while audience members were greeting Nelson after a Monday night concert.

Westin marketing director Matt Boland says Nelson's crew called in the middle of the night from the road, asking the resort to scour surveillance footage after the mascot went missing.

Boland says he was outside the hotel Tuesday morning when an apologetic man drove up and handed him a shoebox and instructions to return it to Nelson.

Boland says the armadillo was inside and has been sent to the singer in California.

Google asks Supreme Court to weigh in on legality of data collecting program

Google is asking the Supreme Court to weigh in on the legality of the company’s past collection of unencrypted Wi-Fi data from routers across America.

As part of Google’s Street View program, the tech giant sent a fleet of photo-snapping cars around the country to capture the names and MAC addresses of routers to improve its geolocation services from 2008 to 2010, according to Wired. But the vehicles also collected snippets of Internet traffic from unencrypted routers, which the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said last September may be a violation of the Wiretap Act.

The Wiretap Act forbids the interception of electronic communications, but states that it is acceptable to record “electronic communication [that] is readily accessible to the general public.”

Google has long-defended the legality of its data-collecting and asked the Supreme Court on Monday to overrule the appeals court decision and end a series class action lawsuits, Wired reports.

The FCC and the Justice Department have cleared Google of any violations of the law. Google is arguing that the appeals court’s ruling could block security scanning and said it never used the data that it collected.

“IT professionals routinely use the same kind of technology as Google’s Street View cars did to collect packet data in order to secure company networks,” the company said in a court filing.
